The CrossWise Players  presentation of the drama titled Stained: A Drama of Life in Stained Glass on October 5th and 6th, 2002, is a part of Tyler Street United Methodist Church’s 90th Anniversary celebration. This play, written by Alan Elliott and Leon McWhorter weaves incidents in the lives of people and places in Dallas history from 1900 to the present in a story of life, romance, and faith. Former Channel 8 news reporter Sonya Van Sickle will host the production. About the drama, Van Sickle says, “The story follows three generations of a Dallas family from 1900 to the present with each episode in their lives related to one of the eight historic stained glass windows at the church.”

The windows featured in the production were created by turn-of-the-century artist Roger McIntosh. Several buildings featuring his glass works are listed in the National Register of Historic Places including the Adolphus Hotel, the Herbert Marcus home, and the Gunther Hotel in San Antonio. The eight stained glass windows featured in the drama are of some of McIntosh’s finest work.

The drama is dedicated to the memory of Annette Elliott. Annette was a graduate of Sunset High School and Dallas Baptist University and taught in the Dallas, Red Oak, and Cedar Hill school districts. She was a member of the CrossWise Players troupe and appeared in several productions. A lifelong member of the Tyler Street United Methodist Church in Dallas, she was active in children, youth and young adult ministries as well as in various choirs. She was named “Mother of the Year” in 2000. Annette was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1998 but continued to teach at the Highlands Elementary School in Cedar Hill until the illness forced her to retire in April, 2000. She passed away in December 2001. The Highlands Annual for 2001-2002 was dedicated to Annette with the following inscription: “Annette loved children…we will miss her smile, her laugh, her singing, her warm hugs, her friendship, her unselfish care and the love she showed to all of God’s creatures.”

In addition to the 32 actors in the CrossWise troupe, the Stained production features accomplished soloists, a select vocal ensemble and other special music. To present this multimedia drama, stages were constructed and extensive rewiring of the Tyler Street Sanctuary was performed to allow the stained glass windows to be individually lit at critical moments during the play.

Also, an historical display about Tyler Street and Oak Cliff will be on display in Yeats Hall before and after the play.  Admission to Stained and the historical exhibit is free.  For more information about directions or dates, call the church office or CrossWise at 972-467-6897.
